An illustration is a commissioned image created for mass distribution, generally complementing a text or narrative. Illustrations are seen in reproduction, either in print or digitally. They appear in many forms including posters, flyers, magazines, books, advertising, cartoons and others.
The origin of the word “illustration” is late Middle English (in the sense ‘illumination; spiritual or intellectual enlightenment’): via Old French from Latin illustratio(n- ), from the verb illustrate.[1]
