First the idea of global sustainability needs to be defined. The most common definition used for sustainability is when the Brundtland Commissions definition for sustainable development (below) has been achieved -

Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs". It contains two key concepts:

  • the concept of "needs", in particular the essential needs of the world's poor, to which overriding priority should be given; and
  • the idea of limitations imposed by the state of technology and social organization on the environment's ability to meet present and future needs.

While according to google dictionary the definition of global is

  • relating to the whole world: worldwide

The definition of sustainable development already contains the elements of global, with its references to world’s poor. It could then be said that sustainable development can only be global.

Global sustainability could then be said to be when the whole world is developing in a way that meets the needs of the present without compromising the needs of future generations.

Now one definition of concept is a plan or idea.

Based on this definition it could be said that the concept of global sustainability is a plan for the whole world to develop in a way that meets present needs without compromising the needs of future generations.
